It's time to hoist the sails The love of Brindisi for its sea: a start to the International Regatta

Walking through the streets of the centre of Brindisi it’s easy to run into groups of young sailors, in their blue and white uniforms, while they’re buying the last few things before setting sail. All the young girls stop to admire them, enthusiastically, getting carried away by the “charm of the uniform” most admired by women. And not only members of the crew remind us that we are in a city where the sea is an absolute protagonist but also the salty scent that enters strongly into our nostrils accomplice also a light breeze that with its stinging blow exalts the olfactory pleasure. You can also perceive it when there’s sirocco wind and the humidity wets the people’s faces, as well as the surfaces of the streets. We are in the city nicknamed “door of Orient in the Mediterranean” for its natural strategic position, an open door on the sea. This is the arrival point of the Appia- Traiana road and of the Via Francigena that, from northern Europe, indicated Brindisi as the embarking point for the Holy Land. And this is the starting point to sail off to Greece, Turkey and the rest of the Mediterranean (there are three basins, communicating amongst each other). One called “internal or touristic”, dedicated to the traffic of passengers and one called “external” used mainly for industrial purposes.) “In Brindisi, where I am, my long journey ends”, as it was for Orazio. While Brindisi is the starting point for those who would like to find emotions being in contact with the blue waters, from the simple walks on the wharf, admiring the boats along the dock, and enjoying the various events regarding sailing and boating, conceived to enhance the “eternal love between sea and territory”. Among these an important event is represented by the International Regatta Brindisi-Corfu’, promoted by the “Circolo della vela” association (www.circolovelabrindisi.it), which was created as an entertainment among friends and has become the symbol and tradition of the sailing organization of the city and that reaches the twenty-fourth edition. The appointment for the sailing enthusiasts is from the 10th to 12th of June. Over 100 boats on their way to conquer the most desires sailing trophy of Southern Italy. The countries that compete? Greece, Montenegro, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, but also France, Sweden, United Kingdom, Malta, Usa and Russia. They are all ready to hoist their sails, under the watchful look of the “Monumento al Marinaio d’Italia” (Monument to the Sailor of Italy) that symbolizes the “helm of a ship”, inaugurated in 1933 in presence of King Vittorio Emanuele III.
