THE APPEAL FOR APULIA GROWS, ALWAYS A MORE TRENDY TOURIST DESTINATION

In a tourist market that in the past few years has had to face unforeseeable situations and has registered changes, even remarkable in travelling habits, Apulia has seen an increase – with an acceleration between 2005 and 2008- in the number of people who chose Apulia as a location for their travels, becoming a trendy destination, always more popular, valued and requested nationally and from abroad. Having to face many variable situations – the availability of money, the expectations of travelers, the imagery of a tourist destination, the innovation of products, the quality of the offer and services, transports, environment, and territorial context – the Apulian tourism system has proved to know how to compete. I believe that the success factors are many, not only connected to the peculiar characteristics of our territory. Certainly, the richness of history and traditions, or the charm of colors, flavors and the warmness of our people, mean a lot. But the performances of Apulia are essentially a merit of the development of a new touristic model, which has levered  in the capability of the operators and on the effectiveness of the sectional policies and administrative choices. We have given answers to new demands. If there in an increase in requests for green holidays and in the countryside, Apulia can present an excellent rural offer and many parks and protected areas, thanks to the choices made in the past years. The region, investing in the availability of sites of social/cultural interest, is able to attract a continuously increasing number of cultural tourism, growing – second in Italy – for a number of visitors in museums and in archeological areas. Thanks to an event-destination, organized to deseasonalize and diversify the offer, with “Puglia Night Parade” we have animated the entire regional territory during a winter month that had never registered, before now,  important tourist flows like the ones recorded recently. For all this, if 2008 had registered – on an international scale – signs of a difficult economical crisis that hit also tourism, last year the number registered in Apulia signed a positive increase of 7 percent, which I believe can certainly be repeated in the future. I say this even if the moment of crisis that we are experiencing prepares us to not expect the numbers that we registered during the past two years. But we will not stop to commit ourselves in order to obtain elements of opportunity from the crisis. Altogether, we must  proceed with responsibility in the path we set out, to render our Apulia a place always more extraordinary and hospitable.
